This book centered on Agent Mercedes Ramirez, and we learned a lot more about her background. The author has created some very amazing characters.

As well, the family-type atmosphere that is so much a part of these agents lives carries on and extends to the victims they have saved.

Okay, you really should read these books in order, as the background of each character (and their victims) is needed so that you can understand the complex relationships that have developed. I admit to loving the first in the series (The Butterfly Garden) more, but this is a close second. The author lost part of a star for all of the phrases and words that were not translated into English… However, this was really good. Mercedes will be leaning on her team to see her through this. As well, her relationship with Siobhan may be coming to an end. Each child that comes to her brings back memories of her own childhood, and right now her “birth family” wants what she is unwilling to give. While both the police and the team are trying to figure out who this “angel” is, Mercedes is grappling with more than just the case. The children are being made to watch so that they know they will no longer be abused, and then they are left for Mercedes to find and look after. There is a killer out there, targeting parents that are abusing their children. He will not be the only child to arrive on her doorstep. Apparently the angel that killed his parents told him to sit and wait for Mercedes. Mercedes comes home from a romantic evening with Siobhan, only to find a young boy, covered in blood, sitting on her porch, clutching a teddy bear.
